I just love AcroYoga. It opens the door to curiosity, trust and play – combining the whimsical elements of acrobatics and the grounded aspects of yoga asana (posture). I liken it learning how to fly with friends. Exploring gravity and body weight to play with shapes and movement.
PLAY LIKE KIDS
Find your inner child! Playing around and creating shapes will no doubt become infectious. Not only does AcroYoga cultivate playfulness, it’s the ultimate partner workout – fun, creative and invigorating while you build incredible physical strength and balance. You could even say it feels more like a dance than physical exercise.
A PRACTICE FOR EVERYONE
If you have ever spotted a group of people creating shapes on the beach or in the park and thought ‘that looks like fun, but I could never do it’… you can! The beauty of this practice is that it truly is for everybody and any fitness level. You don’t need to be a gymnast, yogi, fitness fanatic or a particular size or shape. You will quickly learn the techniques that will allow you to lift someone twice your size.
CONNECTION AND TRUST
There are at least three people involved in Acro: a base on the bottom, a flyer on top, and a spotter to prevent any falls. You have to rely on one another to elevate your practice. You have to trust each other! Finding trust in the physical unlocks trust in the mind. As you practice letting go physically, you can practice letting go mentally, which brings wonderful benefits to our daily lives.
Since making AcroYoga a part of my life, I have never felt stronger. It really is a whole body workout. Holding tight while you balance on the instability of someone’s feet, or doing all you can with every muscle of your body to not let your friend fall as you hold them up brings the burn that is unique to the practice. There will be many falls as you go, but with every failure comes a new strength.
